2 min read

Montagu Springs has plenty of entertainment on site, meaning you never have to leave. The kids can be entertained for hours in the swimming pools, tennis courts, and gaming room. But if you are starting to get a little cabin fever, Montagu is the perfect spot for activities, both in town and day trips. Here are some of our top activities to entertain kids while staying with us.

Tractor Rides

A fun and exciting way of exploring Montagu is on a tractor! Montagu Tractor Trips was established in 1985 and has since become a much-loved activity for adults and children alike. The trips take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Protea Farm, leaving at 10:00 and 14:00. The tractor meanders up the Langeberg Mountain, reaching an altitude of 1500 metres. Capedry also offers tractor rides through the fruit orchards – perfect for those who don’t like heights. They run every Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 and are free of charge.

They also offer rentals of their colourful bikes and e-bikes, which means that you and the kids can zip around town to your favourite spots. They also rent mountain bikes, so perhaps you can try some of the easier mountain biking routes.

Moving outside of Montagu, Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary began in 2001 when the SPCA asked the Van Zijl’s to shelter two donkeys. The Sanctuary now provides a permanent home to destitute, rescued donkeys, while assisting with the rehabilitation of donkeys elsewhere and providing training and education. Open Thursday to Sundays from 10:00 to 16:00, visit Eseltjiesrus to meet the donkeys and interact with them – a fun and educational experience for adults and kids alike. You can also grab some food from the café, which has a kid’s menu. The sanctuary is a 40-minute drive from Montagu.

Matjiesfontein

Matjiesfontein is a bit further out, being an hour and 45-minute drive from Montagu, but definitely worth the drive! This quaint town is filled with entertainment and has something for everyone, no matter the age. For the history buffs, explore the Old Post Office and Railway Station. Take a bus tour in an old red double-decker bus, while Johnny keeps you entertained with funny jokes and amazing tales from history. Do some ghost hunting at the Lord Milner Hotel, which is known for its supernatural elements, having been established in 1884. This town is like nothing you’ve experienced before.

Montagu has some brilliant activities to do in town, while also being the perfect base for some great day trips! If you need any directions or recommendations, please don’t hesitate to ask at reception – our friendly and knowledgeable staff will be more than happy to help.
