Explore The Cape Central Valley In Style With A Steam Train Trip

2 min read

Are you looking for a unique way to explore the beauty of the Western Cape? The newly reinstated New Cape Central Railway might just be your answer!

In 1893, NCCR was committed to completing the work Cape Central Railways had started, which was to connect Worcester and Voor Bay in Mossel Bay via railway. The intention was to connect rural villages and agricultural land to Cape Town, to ensure faster transportation of fresh produce. After bankruptcy and the change of company in 1893, Swellendam was reached in 1899 and Riversdal in 1903. Despite hiccups in the form of destruction from war, floods, and other transportation issues, Mossel Bay was reached on 25 July 1907. The quick expansion of the railway was possible due to the choice of following the slopes, rather than ploughing through the hills and mountains, resulting in a challenging, yet beautiful route. Besides the awe-inspiring scenery, this train journey was remembered for its unique aroma: a mix of coal smoke and local flora was a memory that stuck with all passengers.

On 16 September 2023 the classic steam train started its regular run along the iconic 130-year-old rail line! Every Saturday at 10:00 and 15:00 the train will run for four hours starting at the Robertson Railway Station. The train will make its way along the breath-taking vineyards and stunning mountains of the Cape Central Valley, heading for either Worcester or Swellendam. While on board, you can enjoy 9 complimentary wine tastings from local wineries. This includes wine from Robertson Wines, Bonnievale Wines, and other guest wineries. Light meals by the Spasie Trein Kombuis are available for purchase while on board. Tickets are R550 for those 12 and above, while under 12’s travel for R300. Under 3’s board for free when with a parent.
